The Big Question About Why The Hulk Was Hiding In ‘Infinity War’ Has Finally Been Answered By The Russo Brothers

20 August 2018

Infinity War is a complete success and it’s a damn good movie to watch! If you haven’t, do it immediately! The thing that bothered the most of the fans is why did Hulk hide inside Banner’s body the whole time?

Why wouldn’t Hulk come out during the Battle of Wakanda?

When questions like these rise, Marvel fans spark theories

One fan proposed that Bruce Banner has actually been a Skrull impostor since Thor: Ragnarok, making him unable to access the real Hulk’s powers in Infinity War. However, the more common theory among fans has been that the Hulk was simply afraid to face Thanos again.

It’s hard to comprehend that Hulk is afraid of anything

In the behind-the-scenes commentary for Infinity War, the Russo Brothers answered the big question

“People speculated whether there was some fear on the Hulk’s part about having to face Thanos again,” explains Joe Russo on the commentary track. “But I think ultimately it’s that he’s tired of playing hero to Bruce Banner,” continues Joe.

According to Joe, old Hulky is done playing Banner’s errand boy and by “errands,” it is meant fighting aliens, helping the Avengers save the world, etc.

“What makes [the Hulk] unique as a character is that there’s a host body that is being fought over by two distinct personalities who hate each other,” adds Joe. “Both want control of the host body,” explains Russo.

“We thought an interesting direction to take him in is, well, what if Banner, who typically uses the Hulk to solve crisis situations, what if the Hulk were no longer interested in solving those problems for Banner?” posits the director.  The relationship is becoming increasingly dysfunctional and that’s what’s going on here,” Joe elaborates during the commentary.  Basically, the Hulk and Banner need to have a chat about living as equal parts, as opposed to the Hulk being Banner’s tool.

Near the end of Infinity War, Banner says, “Hulk, we got a lot to figure out, pal.”

There is also a theory that it might have something to do with the Hulk’s uniform in Avengers 4.

The theory here is that the Hulk will finally agree to appear once he is given an official slot on the Avengers team — as a hero, not just a weapon.

In other words, the Hulk may finally be ready to focus his strength and become an official member of the Avengers team.

With all in mind one thing is certain, Banner and the Hulk will work things out in Avengers 4.
